Letters to My Daughter, May 2014

It's been a while since my last post and I'm glad that I'm back with Letters to Our Daughters for the month of May.
This month, I am linking to a lovely friend with a beautiful heart, Kirsty Lamour of Kirsty Lamour Photography. I can't wait to read what she wrote to her two cute, beautiful daughters.
My dearest Jo,
Growing up is funny, isn’t it?
During your first and second grade years, friendship bloomed
naturally. You formed a close and beautiful friendship with girls and boys. All
of you truly enjoyed each other’s company. You shared stories, you took care of
each other, challenge each other, and played together every day. Everything was
just simple and beautiful.
Then it slowly changed.
The boy started to spend less and less time with you. And
suddenly, everything just stopped.
“He doesn’t even say hello to me anymore,” you said.
You are hurt. You are sad. I am double sad (just because
moms are always double sad when their children are sad).
For weeks you tried hard to mend that broken friendship. You
offered him your snacks, asked him about books to start a conversation, asked
him to play together, but none of those worked. So you started to question
yourself, is it because you are “you” and that is why he doesn’t like to play
with you anymore.
My little, please know that people grow and their interests
might change. Sometimes people come and stay in your life. Other times, they
come and go. When people walk away from you, learn to let them go. It doesn’t
mean you do something wrong or that they are bad people. It just means that
their part in your story is over.
Please remember this for a long time: do not change yourself
to be someone else to make people like you. Stay true to yourself and the right
people who belong in your life will come to you and stay. As we grow older we
don’t lose friends, we just learn who the real ones are. I learned this too. It
might hurt but that’s just the way it is.
